Dane has started tae kwon do lessons at our gym. We signed him up as a Christmas present and his best friend Ben signed up as well. It is super cute how excited he is about it and he likes talking about it. He LOVES wearing his gi. It has been interesting because this is our first foray into doing any kind of organized activity for our kids (other than swimming lessons) and it has been a little difficult now having to work our dinner schedule around Dane's class on Monday and Wednesday nights. But that's going to be our lives for the next billion years so I guess we had better get used to it. It seems like people who start karate are many times in it for the long haul, and I don't know that we will be, but he can do it for a few months and then we will see how it goes from there.
Cute little Graham has had a hard time with being left out of Dane's activities, mostly his preschool and now the tae kwon do lessons. He has had several huge meltdowns about wanting to go to Dane's lessons and crying about wanting to be five. I have been thinking and thinking about how we can help him not feel so left out, and I organized a little playgroup with a few friends who have kids his age. It has been so great. It's just once a week and he wishes it were even more often. It's so nice to give him his own playdates and his own friends. I think he just needs some more one-on-one time and things planned just for him, which may be easier to do when Dane is in kindergarten next year. Graham has also been angling to start potty training, and has used the toilet successfully three or four times, so that might happen in the next few weeks. I want it to be TOTALLY his idea, because he definitely has his own opinions about not doing things if he wants to. I do not see any point in getting into a battle with him if he isn't into it.
Lucy got a haircut. The first picture is a before picture, and the second is the after. She had gotten one haircut before (from my mom, in Ecuador), but it got out of control again and it was just looking so messy all the time! It's been so dry here that it's just a staticky mess and not curly at all, and it was about three inches longer on the sides than in the back. So I finally gave her a bob and evened it out all the way around. It hurt my heart to cut off all those little inches and curls, but it looks soooo much better now so it was worth it. Also, she is allllll about eating big people food and none of that baby food any more. She refuses to eat baby food at dinner time when we are all eating dinner, and just wants Tommy to feed her from a regular big spoon and not a baby spoon, haha. She loved blueberries when we introduced them to her and is getting a lot better at using her pincers to get food into her mouth. She still has no teeth yet though!
Dane and Graham have been playing so well together lately. It has been cold for most of January, so we have been inside a lot more than usual (but this last week was so nice, we were at the park at least three times and went on a bike ride). They have been up to all sorts of shenanigans, like a huge campground with all the couch cushions in our family room and a picnic involving all of their blankies. They have been making lots of messes but they will play together happily for hours most days. Sometimes there is a lot of screaming, usually from Graham, but if he's in a good mood and not too tired or hungry they are so happy playing together. It is so nice! This is why Graham has a hard time understanding why he's not allowed to do what Dane does with his preschool, etc. He thinks he is the same age and stage as him.
We went with some friends to an escape room. And it was super fun! We were separated into two teams, so we did men vs. women, and we both beat the hour time limit. (The boys won, but we were ahead almost the whole time until the end.) It's so nice to do something with other adults!
Lucy is standing up so well, all over the place. I love this girl and how big she is getting. Tommy put her down at church today and she was standing up by herself in the middle of the room without anything to hold onto for a good ten seconds. Crazy! She is determined to follow her brothers around and I am worried she's going to be walking in a month with how much she is growing.
